A new pattern for that yarn you don’t know what to do with . . . 🧶

Happy Wednesday! Today I’m excitedly popping in to let you know I have a new pattern ready for you. Meet the Tipping Point Scarf:

Styled view of a chonky size Tipping Point Scarf, a beginner-friendly triangular scarf knit from tip to tip in an addictive textured lace stitch pattern with an easy repeat & simultaneous i-cord edge.

This one started with four skeins—two singles and a pair—that sat in my yarn cabinet for years. They were beautiful but discontinued and irreplaceable, and I never knew exactly what to make with them. That is until a particularly demanding stretch at work earlier this year, when I needed something small, practical, and satisfying to keep my hands busy. And what better project than a skinny scarf?!

A skinny Tipping Point Scarf—shown in a DK, multicolored yarn—is a perfect handknit gift that uses just one skein of any yarn. Quick-to-knit and fun to make for beginners and advanced knitters alike.

After figuring out the shaping and elements I wanted to include, I cast on with a variegated silk/merino blend that I got at Stitches West 2020. The whole thing practically flew off the needles, knitting up in just a week using my favorite stitch pattern ever—that textured, squishy fabric you probably recognize from seven of my other patterns.

I loved it so much that I cast on two more versions in quick succession: one with slightly faster shaping using a leftover skein from my second Nydia pullover, and another with even faster shaping using two skeins of a pearly Aran weight. Each one turned out differently, but they all proved the same thing: you really don’t need a lot of yarn to make something fun and wearable.

The Tipping Point Scarf is a pattern that lets the yarn you have on hand dictate the finished object’s size. Three sizing options (skinny, midi, and chonky) give you control over the width at the scarf’s “tipping point” and how soon you get there. It works with fingering weight yarn all the way up to chunky—no gauge swatch required—and includes a 20-minute video guide that walks you through the main techniques before you even cast on. Use it to stash-bust, to try a new yarn before committing to a larger quantity, or simply to treat yourself!

Find the pattern on my website, Ravelry, or Etsy.

Cast on and see how far a single skein can take you! 💕
